Day 1: Congreso - Avenida de Mayo - Obelisco/Theatre District - Plaza de Mayo - San Telmo - La Boca
Day 2: El Ateneo - Retiro/Plaza San Martin - Recoleta(incl. cemetery) - Rosedal de Palermo - Belgrano (incl. Chinatown)
*Note: days are interchangeable (ie, day 2 can be first) and they do not need to be on consecutive days

Day 1
Congreso
We start our tour at the exquisite Palacio del Congreso (national congress building), a site rich in history & design. The Plaza is surrounded by some of the city’s most beautiful buildings, including one of the city’s oldest cafe’s, Confiteria Molino.
Avenida de Mayo
From here we make our way down the Avenida de Mayo, named after the May Revolution of 1810, when independence from Spain was first declared. This whole avenue, designed to be an architectural masterpiece in itself, is home to numerous breathtaking buildings, including the Palacio Barolo, Teatro Avenida, The Astoria Hotel, & Buenos Aires’ officially oldest cafe, Tortoni.
9 de Julio/Obelisco/Theatre District
The Avenida de Mayo crosses the Avenida 9 de Julio, the world’s widest city street. We walk up the 9 de Julio to the Obelisco & to Buenos Aires’ version of ‘Times Square’. Buenos Aires is always listed within the top 10 cities worldwide for live theatre and here you will see that on full display, with the beautiful Teatro Colón, & numerous Broadway-esque theatres all around. It’s a feast for the eyes all around.
Plaza de Mayo
We then stroll down the photogenic ‘diagonal norte’ to the Plaza de Mayo, the heart of the City Centre. The Plaza is home to the ‘Pink House’ (Argentina’s version of the ‘White House’), the national Cathedral (where Pope Francis used to work!), the Cabildo (Argentina’s first government building when it was still a Sanish colony ), plus many other exquisite & historical buildings.
San Telmo
The pavement of the City Centre soon gives way to the cobblestone of San Telmo, a sign that we’re making our way into some of the oldest parts of the city. In the early days of Buenos Aires, San Telmo was home to the city’s wealthiest families. A series of yellow fever epidemics led to the wealthy to move to the outskirts of the city (now Recoleta & Retiro) and San Telmo began its decadent decline. Artists & the working class soon moved into the mansions, converting the neighbourhood into what it is now beloved for: a bohemian haven for antiques, cafes, bars, restaurants, & tango, as well as for the famous Sunday Street Market. A short bus ride takes us to our final destination for the day.
La Boca
Home to the country’s original port, La Boca is now most known for its colorful streets full of tango, art, & fútbol (aka soccer!). La Boca’s rich history is still very much alive in the many conventillos (tenement housing for the old port’s labour force) now converted into cafes, parrillas (steakhouses), & souvenir shops. La Boca is a fantastic place to see street tango, purchase a keepsake or 2, & appreciate one of Argentina’s greatest painters, Benito Quinquela Martín, who revived the declining port neighbourhood in the 1960’s by converting it into what it is today, one of the most emblematic sites in the country.
Day 1 of our tour concludes with transportation back to your abode!

In each barrio, there are several options for refreshment breaks in various ‘cafe notables’, historical cafes where old world charm, design, & service reign.
We can take as many short breaks as you like, keeping in mind that there will be 1 ‘lunch break’ during the day.
Tasting Tour Option: Sample some of Argentina’s most famous foods, such as empanadas, choripan, medialunas, & dulce de leche, while on the tour!
We make quick ‘snack stops’ in each barrio instead of a more formal lunch break, however 1 of these stop will be a longer ‘sit down’ to enjoy a well deserved rest & snack.
*Please let us know if you would like the tasting tour option before the tour begins, so we can pace our stomachs & schedule accordingly!
Day 2
We start our 2nd tour day with a quick stop at El Ateneo, ‘The world’s most beautiful bookstore’ according to National Geographic (2019) before making our way to the Plaza San Martin.
Retiro/Plaza San Martin
At the Plaza San Martin, you will quickly see how Buenos Aires got its nickname of ‘The Paris of South America’. 360 views of historical architectural excellence abound, including Retiro train station, the British Tower, the Kavanagh Building (the city’s first skyscraper & an excellent example of rationalist architecture), the Palacios San Martin & Paz, as well as the momument to one of the most important figures of Argentine & South American history, Jose San Martín. From here we walk down the french architecture-laden streets of Retiro, and seemlessly enter the neighbouring barrio of Recoleta.
Recoleta
This is home to many of the city’s most luxurious palaces, homes, & high-end shopping. This is also the barrio of the renowned Recoleta Cemetery. The very historical cemetery is a ‘must see’, however please note that the entrance fee (currently approx $8usd) is NOT inlcuded in the tour price. After a thorough tour of the cemetery’s most interesting stories, momuments, & mausoleums, we make our way to the Avenida del Libertador, where we can see the majestic Facultad de Derecho (Law Building) & beside it, the fascinating sculpture, Floralis Genérica (it takes 1 full day to slowly open & close!) From here we take a short taxi ride ot our next stop.
Rosedal de Palermo
This stunning rose sanctuary is a perfect example of how Buenos Aires was not just designed to have beautiful buildings, but also to be a beautiful city in its entirety. Parque El Rosedal, complete with scuplture garden, lake, & Andalusian-inspired gazebo, is just one of the city’s numerous & opulent green spaces, as you will have noticed by this point in the tour!
From here, we can either take another short taxi ride to the neighbourhood of Belgrano, an upscale neighbourhood that also happens to be the home of Buenos Aires very compact Chinatown, OR we can stay in Palermo, making our way to the historical Botanical Gardens & then down into the trendy restaruant, cafe, & shopping district. Both are very interesting options. Depending on our time & energy, we can make a decision together.
Transportation back to your abode concludes day 2 of your tour!
